MANDATE
Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre is a community arts centre that provides a place for intercultural connections, a gathering place for the community and an opportunity for all to experience the arts in programs, events and performances.

Principles guiding decisions on the programming of Moberly are:

Cultural diversity is a fundamental aspect of Vancouver’s identity and a resource to be drawn on Community Enrichment

Asian Heritage Month” (May) “Through South Asian Eyes”, workshops are open to the public; city wide partnership with Parks Board. Moberly is also one of the sponsors of the The Sawan Mela Festival” Celebrating Cultural Harmony through South Asian Eyes, (June) festival with stage entertainment, over 4000 people from the community are in attendance. (this project is in partnership with SAFA (South Asian Family Association) www.safa.ca
Vancouver Celebrates Diwali” (Oct/Nov) An annual city wide event where workshops are held in numerous community centers though out Vancouver in Oct/Nov. and all the communities are brought together for a final Diwali celebration at City Hall and at the Roundhouse. Each participating center presents Diwali workshops at their own facilities. This festival showcases the South Asian community city wide. The MACC Studio Theatre presents annual shows of the “Connecting Community Dance Series.” Building upon the success of our previous dance productions, this fresh new contemporary dance series highlights the vision of community dance groups, culturally diverse dance forms, emerging dancers and celebrated professional dance artists. This project grew from a small dance presentation to a highly professional successful performance series highlighting some a Vancouver’s top professionals including: Ballet BC, Wen Wei Dance, Lorita Leung Chinese Dance Company, Sudnya Dance Academy (Classical Indian), Blue Orchard Dance Company, FootEdge Dance Company, Dancers Dancing and Raven Spirit Dance Company.
MACC is also a partner in presenting LINK, a great series of community dance. LINK is an annual (SPRING) showcase of contemporary dance where community dancers from various arts and community centers in the lower mainland, come together to present dance works. These performances are rotated to be presented at different centers each year, highlighting all the community groups. This project is greatly supported by all participating partners.
“University/College Big Band Jazz Festival” (March/April) Seven to nine university and college big bands from the lower mainland and Victoria present concerts starting around 12:00 noon until 11:30 pm at the MACC Studio theater. This project is supported by UBC Faculty of Music, Moberly and the Coastal Jazz Blues Society.
MACC's resident opera company, OPERA APPASSIONATA, opened in the Fall of (2005) with an exceptional event called "Wunschkonzert", under the inspiring leadership of Artistic Director Frank Klassen. Following this OPERA APPASSIONATA has presented George Bizet's one act opera DR. MIRACLE and Mozart’s Gardener in the Greenhouse “La finta giardiniera” a fully-staged Opera with Orchestra in the Sunset Nursery Greenhouse! Moberly also develops and provides support for arts projects, festivals and residencies. Community projects include the "South Asian Family and Women’s networking" – weekly drop-in series (SVNH), annual Cultural Sports Days, Cultural Culinary Exchanges and the SAFA Community & Arts Youth workshop series. Community Art Partnership projects have included "Brecht in the Park” outdoor theater, “African Hut Tales" storytelling festival, "Re-Writing Her Body” a visual journal theater workshops and “The Big Bug Mystery”, Public Dreams. Residency Grant Projects have included "The Integrated Arts Project", "The Maharaja’s Daughters", “The Story of Ramayana”, “Project Tendril”–, City of Vancouver Public Art, Artist Eric Neighbour and the Artist in Residence Projects “Welcome Walkway: Mosaics and Banners” (2002) with artists/facilitators: Glen Andersen, Marina Szijarto Design, “Community Textures” (2004) with artist Barbara Meneley, Here and Now: A Violence Prevention Theatre Project in Collaboration with the Indo-Canadian Community (2005) by Headlines Theater and “The Art of Living Together” (2005/06) with artist Elizabeth Sherfrin.

Rehearsal Groups (paid) at Moberly include and have included: Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT), “Missing Lives” Helping Spirit Lodge, Choices program, an Aboriginal women’s drama presentation, “Have this dance” workshop play by Suzie Payne, Dancers Dancing, La Luna Theatre Productions, Public Dreams Productions, Opera Appassionata, Headlines Theater, The VOC Soul Gospel Choir, A Vancouver Women’s Choir and Belly Belly Hip Dance Cooperative.

Programs at Moberly are always updated to meet the requests of the community. Moberly has developed and offered a variety of programs since 2003 including, (Children/Youth) children’s choir, sitar, tabla & Dhol drumming, piano lessons, kidz arts club after school, Wushu, Fun with Singing and drama, voice lessons, Bhangra and Ballet dance as well as Arts in the Park (Summer). (Adult/Senior) creative writing, actors gym, painting, growing sculptures, pottery arts & crafts, core strength through dance, ballet & belly dance, scrap booking, Dhol, Indo-Jazz and Bhangra dance. |
