MANDATE
Moberly Arts & Cultural Centre is a community arts centre that provides a place for intercultural connections, a gathering place for the community and an opportunity for all to experience the arts in programs, events and performances.

PRINCIPLES

Principles guiding decisions on the programming of Moberly are:
Intercultural Connections

Cultural diversity is a fundamental aspect of Vancouver’s identity and a resource to be drawn on Community Enrichment

Communities which work and celebrate together are more resilient and supportive of all members Creativity

The inherent human capacity of creativity promotes well-being and generates innovative thinking and action Flexibility

Practices and policies which are flexible enable a wide range of creative ideas
Participation

Participation enhances the growth of the individual and empowers communities to determine their own priorities Acknowledgement of the value of the artist

Artists, as key contributors to community life, must be recognized and recompensed for their work.

 
 
PERFORMANCES at the MACC STUDIO THEATRE


The MACC Studio Theatre presents annual shows of the Connecting Community Dance Series.Building upon the success of our previous dance productions, this fresh new contemporary dance series highlights the vision of community dance groups, culturally diverse dance forms, emerging dancers and celebrated professional dance artists. University/College Big Band Jazz Festival Seven to nine university and college big bands from the lower mainland and Victoria present concerts starting around 12:00 noon until 11:30 pm at the MACC Studio theater. This project is supported by UBC Faculty of Music, Moberly and the Coastal Jazz Blues Society.

Community Arts PARTNERSHIPS


Moberly also develops and provides support for arts projects, festivals and residencies. Community projects for 2009/2010 included:

South Asian Family Association (SAFA): brings Creative Remix2 a 5 week summer camp back to Moberly- with an emphais on the arts.

MISCELLANEOUS Productions: Power A solo, duo, trio, and ensemble performance featuring culturally diverse youth in collaboration with professional artists.

Shakti Dance Society: LIGHT, an interdisciplinary piece, which tells the stories associated with the celebration of Diwali.

Arts & Culture, Parks Board, City of Vancouver: Ephemeral Tea Party, Utilizing natural materials from nature, artists Lori Weidenhammer and Sharon Kallis guided the participants to create elaborate desidngs concentrating on colour, form and texture. Shadow Puppet Workshop, Puppeteer, Maggie Winston from Lost & Found Puppet Co. led 3 workshops with Seniors and young people from the Sunset Community Neighbourhood.Historic Sign Workshop with artist Margaret Naylor  and a local school group, honouring the centenary of the South Hill Community.

Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra: Silk Road, an educational concert withlocal school groups that took us around the world through a series of unusal instruments and songs.

Sarah Hayward: STRIPES THE MYSTERY CIRCUS, a delightful theatrical spectacle that tells the story of an audition that humorously and touchingly goes awry.

Art & Culture, Parks Board, The Sunset Association and The Thomas family of Delta, BC, in memory of their father, W. Stan Thomas, founding president of the Sunset Memorial Centre, and Prime Signal Ltd. Artist in Community project, Here and There led by artists Pat Beaton and Zee Kesler engaging community members to represent their reltionships with the neighbourhood both past and present.

 

Rehearsal Groups at Moberly have included: Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre Dancers Dancing, La Luna Theatre Productions, Public Dreams Productions, Opera Appassionata, Headlines Theater, The VOC Soul Gospel Choir, A Vancouver Women’s Choir, Orchestra Armonsi, Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, Fighting Chance Productions, and Belly Belly Hip Dance Cooperative.

With the support of a diverse cultural community in the area, art partners and artist involvement at Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre there is excitement for a vibrant centre for arts in the community of South Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver as well.
